WHY WE LOVE TULUM

1. TULUM VIBE

If you’re looking for your destination wedding to have the feel of a chic tropical escape, Tulum is the place for you. Just a few hours south of the busy mega-resort city of Cancun, the small beach town is hidden between the lush jungle and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. It has a carefree charm that combines pristine natural beauty, hip style, and the otherwordly magic of Mayan culture. Doesn’t holistic yoga on the beach, followed by a massage, and a cup of organically grown coffee sound like the perfect start to your wedding day?

2. ECO-FRIENDLY TULUM

Planning a “green” wedding? Tulum is a great location for couples concerned about the environmental impact of their wedding. Outstanding organic food and regional flowers are readily available, you can work directly with locals to get custom Yucatan crafts as an ethical choice for wedding favors, and you and your guests could easily forgo car rentals and ride bikes everywhere in town – even to the ceremony!  Most importantly, there are many options for eco-conscious venues that were built responsibly with only natural materials, and that take proactive steps to help guests reduce their environmental footprint. One of our favorites, azulik, lights rooms only with romantic candlelight to ensure local breeding sea turtles don’t get confused by artificial light when returning to the beach to nest.

3. TULUM WEDDING VENUES

When it comes to locations for your ceremony and reception, the possibilities are endless in Tulum! You can choose from a simple (and less expensive) beach club to an ultra-contemporary private boutique hotel to a hidden hacienda in the heart of the jungle. Wedding planners here specialize in creating wedding decor designs that complement the natural beauty of the area, and can keep it simple or as luxurious as you want. Below are some of our favorite wedding venues:

  • akiin beach club – Lali and her wedding planning & logistics team will make all your beach wedding dreams come true at this secluded oceanside location. Specializing in rustic elegance, Akiin’s spaces are designed with all-natural materials and just exude a relaxed vibe. The location is one of the few in Tulum that can accommodate large weddings of 200 guests.
  • ana y jose charming hotel & spa – A very popular wedding venue, this boutique hotel has varied options for your getting ready, ceremony, and reception, all of them stunning.
  • be tulum  – Described by Travel & Leisure as the place where “luxury and earthiness coexist”, Be Tulum is known as one of Tulum’s most exclusive and stylish boutique hotels. In-room jacuzzis and an extensive wellness spa makes this the perfect spot for a bridesmaids’ weekend or the getting ready suite for the bride. And there’s even an on-site shaman to sanctify your day.
  • papaya playa project – Hotel, restaurant, beach club, music venue all combined into one, Papaya Playa Project describes itself as a “playground for the creative community…to reconnect to nature with an urban spirit.” It’s the location for Opera Maya, the Riviera Maya Film Festival, and a monthly Full Moon Party. Their event design experience is a great asset for wedding planning.
  • azulik – The Mexico resort of choice for many hollywood stars and musicians, Azulik offers luxurious eco-friendly villas with 360 degree views of the jungle and ocean surrounding it.  This venue’s design is unique as is each suite. Balinese beds, mosaic tubs, and patio swings are just a few of their features.

4. FOOD IN TULUM

We’re pretty sure it’s nearly impossible to get a bad meal in Tulum! From a 6-course meals by Michelin star chefs to the pastora taco from the corner stall, anything you want is possible.  We love a late-night taco stand for the reception after-party. And wouldn’t colorful paletas (traditional  Mexican popsicles) be the perfect post-ceremony treat on the beach?

5. GUEST ACTIVITIES IN TULUM

Most couples planning a destination wedding so they can spend a whole weekend –  or even a whole week! –  with their family and friends. From swimming with sea turtles to hiking in the Mayan ruins to mezcal-tasting in the jungle, there are innumerable activities for your wedding guests to enjoy. Our favorite for the bride and her bridesmaids is a full day of pampering at a luxury beach side spa. And for the boys? The groom and his groomsmen will love a day of adventure ziplining above the rainforest and diving in cenotes.
